Common Folk loves Sweden!!!!

I wont front I had no idea who DJ Nibc was. I had heard that dude was coming to NYC to celebrate his birthday. He booked up a party on Saturday at Hugs and a buzz got started. The local killers Krames and Palms Out were excited and got involved. Then there was talk of Mapei being around for the Birthday Celebration. I then saw the flayer and at the bottom was a WESC logo. Whoa! I started getting phone calls and emails regarding adding acts and DJ's that wanted to play his birthday party. I certainty did not have any say in the matter. I then checked DJ Nibc myspace page and soon found out what the buzz was about. Simply put, the guy has worked with a ton of greats in the game, from Frankie Knuckles to Busy P. He makes some insane music and is also the brain behind Trunkfunk Records. Apparently he is the king of Sweden and I never knew. Come see him tonight and Saturday and get caught up.

The Bangers + Cobra Kai = Hug it Out

In a world where it's every DJ for themselves, we here at Sweatshop Labor NYC are fighting the divide by actively contacting, booking and now promoting for other DJ's and their respected parties. A few weeks back, after having DJ Krames play Common Folk, we brought up the preexisting idea of having Kobra Kai and The Bangers start a party at Hugs. Currently, we are putting together and overseeing all the parties at Hugs and are becoming proud of the growing venue. Any given day of the week you can see some of the best DJ's and party people this city has to offer from JD Samson and Lauren Flax to Chaz and Broody B of Palms Out Sounds. We are thrilled to be booking real talent and keeping the DJ animosity that plagues NYC at the front door.

The Bangers and Cobra Kai are starting a new party at Hugs. This shit is sure to be a beast of a party. Watch it closely, they do it right and we are happy to call these guys our friends. Hug It Out!!!

Palms Out Sounds PT 2

This friday (the 7th) brings another Palms Out bash. The first Palms Out event, held at Hugs in Brooklyn, featured renowned live acts Purple Crush, Estaw and Spank Rock, with Benny Blanco. If you were there, you know exactly how nuts it was. I can't do the party justice here, as words are really just incomparable to being present. People complain about being in a packed venue, a complaint I can certainly agree with, but in this case it eschewed the common problems found in a tight-fit party space. Instead, any party-goer could jump up on the (barely) raised-stage and grind on Spank Rock in front of the DJ booth while he rapped; this definitely happened, more than a few times. Pictures are all over the internet as proof. Purple Crush screamed at people to get up on stage and go balls-out, complementing the gritty lyrics and sexual overtones with gyrating of their own.

It's not as common, these days, to attend a party where the performers invite the herd to get up and join them. The distinction between attendee and attraction is blurred, resulting in a vibrant, energetic atmosphere that even the lamest dancer could groove in.

These things are vastly important, but what's a party without pleasantries? I mean, of course, alcohol and effects. No one appreciates a good strobe light anymore. I find a lot of enjoyment in multi-colored flashing lights streaming across the dance floor. In some magical way, it highlights the best features of the individual while hiding their deficiencies. Have a huge pimple on that nose? Fuck it. We got spot-lights, red beams, fucking disco balls - all to create an aesthetic environment that results in the possibility for the ugliest CHUD to get laid.

The venue itself is growing on the Brooklyn dance community. Sweatshop Labor NYC has brought through some incredible talent, aside from the aforementioned party. Events as simple as Sunday Movie Night help make this place different from LES haunts - a sense of community and camaraderie pervade the space. Guitar Hero, Skeeball, Buck Hunt and a photo booth are all present to entertain the casual bar-goer. It is incredible how this place could serve as both prime party venue and casual hang out.

Best of all - all these events are FREE. There's really no excuse to not stay in the neighborhood with this going on. I mean, how hard is it to get to the LES from Williamsburg anyway? Fuck pretentious. Let's just walk a few blocks and crush it.

Holiday Season Throwdown All Over Town

This week, and just lately in general we have been really busy. We have been doing our regular hustle around town looking for gigs and planning out Common Folk. More so we have been crafting an LA tour, figuring out what is going on New Years Eve and all kinds of other pointless things to talk about. Anyway this week should be an interesting one in our scene. There is an abnormal amount of talent to been seen and more so heard. Don't let the holidays and the cold stress you out, 'tis the season to be grateful...

Wednesday,
We will be getting wolf like in the basement of Lit.

Thursday,
We are happy to have Cobra Krames, from Cobra Kai guest DJ. He is crazy awesome and I am happy he is in NYC for good.
